Professors dont always have their own websites and Moodle/Compass has no information either. But dont worry, even though the path to getting all of your textbooks is a bit circuitous, there is usually a way to find what you need before the school year begins. Searching for those textbooks. Lets start with knowing where to find the textbooks you need. Sometimes your professor is the preemptive type and will email you all the information you need to know about textbooks before your classes begin. While very appreciated, this does not happen often. Most of the time, I end up checking the Illini Union Bookstore website to see if my professors have listed their required textbooks. To figure out which textbooks you need, go through the department list, select your course number, and choose your professor (if he/she is listed). If some of your professors are not listed, they may not have updated their textbooks for the semester yet. Check back in a few days and keep a lookout for emails or notifications on your Moodle and Compass. Another option, if you are on campus, is to go to the Illini Union Bookstore and go to the lower level. There you can find all of the available textbooks they have. The textbooks are set up by department. So, when you go downstairs, look for a piece of paper that has all of the classes and their corresponding sections listed to help you navigate. Next, understand the difference between required, recommended, or optional. While recommended and optional may seem to be options you can pass on, the professor may teach material that would be extremely difficult to learn without the textbook. So far, Ive best determined what textbooks I actually need by purchasing all of the required books and waiting until the first day of class to decide upon any recommended or optional materials. As you go through the campus bookstore and search up all of your classes, online or downstairs in the physical bookstore, write down every book whether required, recommended, or optional, as well as its corresponding prices. Write down both the new and used prices, as well as the rental price if it is available. Some professors will require you to purchase all of your books and materials from the Illini Union Bookstore. If thats the case, you can make an account at the bookstores website and purchase them in advance, or you can bring books up to the main level and purchase them at the cash registers. Lots of books to choose from. Compare prices! If your professors dont specify where they want you to buy the textbooks, feel free to look into other (possibly lower priced) options. Make sure to only look on reputable sites: reliable shipping/handling, good reviews, etc. I like to check out Amazon first because it usually has the textbook I need and it comes with a variety of prices and options based on the seller. If youre buying from a third-party seller on Amazon, its better to buy from a seller whose order is fulfilled by Amazon, otherwise your order will be fulfilled directly by the seller and that may be a less reliable choice. Another option for buying textbooks is to buy them from your fellow students at Illinois. There are a number of Facebook groups that you can visit to look for any available textbooks that students may be selling. Free For Sale at UIUC is a popular group for people to sell their old textbooks (and old everything else). Considering this is a more informal purchase, the seller may ask to meet somewhere on campus to give you the book. As always, be smart about where youre going to meet your fellow students. Take a friend with you and make sure youre meeting in a place where you are comfortable. However, sometimes your best option is the Illini Union Bookstore. Other materials and practice books required by your professor may only be available there, or your textbook has an online access code that you need with your textbook. Oftentimes the professor will compile all of the required textbooks into a nicely pre-sealed stack that will come out as a lower price than buying each book individually. Whatever you choose, just make sure that you have the correct edition, author, and year of publication, and the textbook should work for you. Make sure you have the correct edition. Sometimes you can get away with having an older edition, other times professors require the most recent one. Consider renting textbooks. If buying textbooks still sounds like too much money or too much commitment, consider renting. Renting textbooks can be a big money saver, knocking $200 books down to $20 and providing some space in your dorm or apartment. The bookstore does offer some textbooks for rent. Some of its deals are better than others, depending on the type of book. Other options for renting include Amazon and campusbookrentals.com. Campus Book Rentals is one of my favorites because they allow you to rent for the semester. Theyre also well priced, timely, and provide an easy, paid return system. Also, feel free to look online at other book rental sites, but make sure to read reviews and see if its a trustworthy site. My friends have had some luck with valore.com as well. Before renting, make sure you dont have to write in the book for any reason, otherwise note taking may be a bit difficult during the semester. Also, consider your learning style, other course requirements, and its usefulness for later courses or even future jobs. The most inexpensive option is to ask friends or classmates if you can borrow their book from a previous class, or if theyd be willing to lend it to you for a small price. Just make sure to ask them some obvious questions, like: Do you need the book any time during the semester? Do I get to keep the book? Am I allowed to write in it? Do you need the book back before the end of the semester? Theyre doing you a favor by letting you use a textbook they most likely bought, so its nice to show them this courtesy. Sometimes, your classes will have readings that dont require you having a textbook for the entire semester. If thats the case, your professor may put library textbooks or other materials on reserve in one of the university libraries. Your professor will notify you that the books are there in class and you can go check the book out for a certain amount of time during the semester. Because you are a student of the university and pay certain fees, you do not have to pay for access to most (if any) of the materials in the university libraries. So much paper, so little backpack space. Finally, decide if your textbook needs to be in print. A lot of large lectures and online classes have online textbooks available, but even if its a smaller classroom, wait until the first day of class and see if you can purchase a cheaper, online version and use a laptop or tablet. Some professors necessitate print textbooks, but lightening the load on your back and being able to access your textbook easily is an option to consider. If youre unsure or worried about not having a textbook on the first day of class, purchase one that you can return later if an electronic edition is available and allowed. While the film could be criticized for being overwrought with growth, discovery, adolescent love and passion in the confines of a girlsââ¬â¢ residential school, its overall impact is bolstered by commendable lead performance from Piper Perabo, which, alongside the filmââ¬â¢s erotic moments, should help win new audiences. Adapted by Canadian screenwriter Judith Thompson from Susan Swanââ¬â¢s novel ââ¬Å"The Wives of Bath,â⬠the movie is Lea Poolââ¬â¢s first experience working from a script she didnââ¬â¢t write herself. While most of the successful lesbian movies of previous years, including ââ¬Å"Go Fish,â⬠ââ¬Å"The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Loveâ⬠and ââ¬Å"But Iââ¬â¢m a Cheerleader,à ¢â¬ taking a light-hearted approach, Lost and Delirious marks a return to more sober Sapphic drama of the years gone by. Lost and Delirious, released in 2001, stars two young actresses in lead roles ââ¬â Piper Perabo (as Pauline Oster) and Jessica Pare (as Victoria Moller). The two girls are roommates in a modern and liberal residential school. The film begins with Mischa Barton (as Mary Bradford) joining the school. She was to become the third member of the hostel room already shared by Pauline and Victoria. Mary (nickname ââ¬ËMouseââ¬â¢) confronts a shock of sorts early next morning, when she discovers that her roommates are not just friends, but a couple. To her credit, Mary displays tact and maturity in handling this delicate situation. By not showing any discomfort while interacting with her room-mates, Mary acquires their confidence and friendship. While Mary was disconcerted at first, she soon gets used to the groans, whispers and cries of pleasure emanating from the bed at the other side of the room. The director presents the feelings of love between the two teenage girls in a realistic manner. As can be expected from adolescents, they display a lot of passion and affection for one another. This harmonious existence, although surreptitious, comes to an abrupt end, when Victoriaââ¬â¢s younger sister barges into their room, when they are both sharing the same bed and lying naked underneath the sheets. Sheââ¬â¢s fine with being perceived a rebel, but being outcast from the securities provided by mainstream society isnââ¬â¢t something she would accept. So she hastily breaks-up with Paulie and finds a boyfriend in order to convince everyone that sheââ¬â¢s straight. Paulie, on the other hand, is totally flummoxed by this change and this drives her toward the deep end. In behavior that is both symbolic and practical, she is shown fencing until sheââ¬â¢s exhausted, and devoting her energies to the predatory spirit of her pet raptor. Even during classes, she expresses her anguish and disappointment, though passionate recitals of Shakespearean sonnets, apparently addressed to her classmate Victoria. It now becomes a little predictable where the plot is headed. The directorââ¬â¢s sensitive handling of her young characters more than compensates for the familiar material and the occasional slipups, like the gnomic pronouncements of the schoolââ¬â¢s Native American gardener Joe. When Victoria sets out to prove to her school that she is a regular heterosexual girl, she accomplishes this through two things; first a fast-track romance with a school-mate called Jake along with abrupt severing of intimate contact with Pauline. The latter devastates Pauline completely. Pauline, who comes from a dysfunctional family background and had not been loved by anyone else before, is completely shattered by this rude and sudden indifference shown by Victoria. With every rebuke from Victoria, Pauline obsession only gets stronger. In a moment of utter desperation, she even asks Mary to cut off her (Paulineââ¬â¢s) hair, so that she will look like a boy and may hence win back Victoria. Pauline also displays volatile behavioral problems with her peers and her teachers, causing them much concern. The film shows the steady decline in Paulineââ¬â¢s state of mind in the context of her pet raptorââ¬â¢s domestication. With movie ends on a tragic note, with Paulineââ¬â¢s irrepressible obsession for Victoria, taking the former to abyss. Although this movie follows the line of numerous boarding school sex-dramas that have preceded it, director Lea Pool offers something unique to the audience. While it is nearly fifty years since the civil rights movement and the feminist movement in the United States, it is a sad reality that sexual minorities are still condemned for abuse and ostracized by peers and parents alike. While the headmistress of the school (who is rumored to be a lesbian herself) shows some empathy and understanding of Paulineââ¬â¢s turmoil, a majority of her mates make fun of her. From the directorââ¬â¢s point of view, the approach has been a compassionate one. It is as if, the film maker is attempting to bring awareness among the audience about the difficulties faced by sexual minorities in twenty first century America. The director has to be commended for her detailed and passionate portrayal of homosexuality. An interesting aspect of the film is its depiction of gender stereotypes, which comes across as very rigid. For instance, the film illustrates how the parents, school administrators, other students and the society at large erect invisible boundaries on adolescent sexual freedom. In other words, teenage girls in the supposedly modern educational institution were punished for deviating outside of their designated stereotypes. Such restrictions are applicable to boys as well as girls, as is evident from the filmââ¬â¢s narrative. It is also interesting to note that the Headmistress Miss Vaughn and teacher Miss Bannet show admirable patience and understanding when dealing with Paulieââ¬â¢s frequent outbursts. Also, these ladies don ââ¬â¢t hold any stereotypical expectations of the girls, with regard to their behavior, sexual orientation, etc. Miss Vaughn tolerates Paulieââ¬â¢s outbursts because she is cognizant of her situation and how she is struggling with feelings of not belonging, not being loved and her intense sexual feelings for Victoria. Having said that, Miss Vaughn and Miss Bannet, were also not spared from gossip, as their closeness is perceived by the girls as arising out of their homosexuality. Hence, there are plenty of instances in the movie where we see negative stereotyping of the homosexual girls. There are some other merits attached to the filmââ¬â¢s cinematography. For example, the film vividly and accurately illustrates how the home, school and the larger society imposes implicit restrictions on sexual expression. In other words, young girls in the residential school were expected to follow stereotypical roles that are decided for them beforehand. Whenever, they deviate from prede fined cultural norm, they encounter huge challenges. This doesnââ¬â¢t apply only to the girls. Even the boys who befriend Victoria in the movie are shown to be heterosexual, suggesting that this particular sexual orientation is the default one. That these implicit social rules are conflicting is a suitable cinematic juxtaposition, as neatly demonstrated by the scene of the formal dance on Parents Day, where the girlsââ¬â¢ behavior differs completely when they dance with adults as when they dance with their peers. Also, the viewer gets a feeling that the girls are putting up an artificial show just in order to please their parents and conform to social norms, consistent with their gender stereotypes. Hence, it can be asserted that the film accurately portrays the problems posed by such rigid concepts as gender stereotypes. It may also be said that if movies such as this are seen by more straight people, then the number of instances of gender and sexual stereotyping will reduce. But sadly, for lesbians and other sexual minorities, it is a poignant reminder that remedy for such rigid stereotyping has not yet arrived. To extend upon gender stereotyping seen in the film, let us take a close look at some of the reactions of other support characters toward Pauline and Victoria, after their homosexuality comes out in the open. Through all this emotional chaos that both girls go through, it is Mary who lends a supporting hand to the troubled girls. Displaying a maturity and understanding that is beyond her age, Mary serves as the confidante for both Victoria and Pauline at a time of high drama. This kindness on part of Mary is all the more admirable given her own issues with her father. With Paulineââ¬â¢s mental stability ever on the decline, she does everything she can to redeem her friend. Victoria, on the other hand, treats the break-up in a matter of fact way, which comes across as cruel. Nevertheless, she is better able to adapt to the changed circumstanc es; although her sudden embrace of heterosexuality seemingly lacks credibility. The character of gardener Joe Menzeis (played by Graham Greene) also shows some understanding of the situation and tactfully advices and consoles Mary. He also does not seem to be a judgmental sort of person. Baring one particular girl, who mentions to Pauline that ââ¬Å"So what, this is twenty first century!â⬠is the exception to the rule. Most of her peers, sadly, seem not to have culturally oriented themselves with the times they live in and still hold on to a biased and distorted perception of homosexuality.
